A good structure is a road map your audience can follow.

Direct answer

Structure a talk with a hook, a clear main message, two or three supporting points with evidence, a summary and a specific call to action. For busy business audiences, state your conclusion first and then explain.

Template

  1. Hook: a question, story or surprising fact.
  2. Main message: one sentence.
  3. Point one, with evidence.
  4. Point two, with evidence.
  5. Point three, with evidence.
  6. Summary: repeat the message.
  7. Call to action: what should they do next?

Tips

  • Write the main message first.
  • One idea per slide.
  • Rehearse the transitions.

Frequently asked questions

How should I structure a presentation?

Open with a hook, state your main point, give two or three supporting points with evidence and finish with a summary and call to action.

How many points should I have?

Often three, since people remember small groups.

Should I put the conclusion first?

For business audiences, yes. Lead with your recommendation, then support it.
