Everyone has a tip. Few people can explain risk. Understanding it protects you from bad offers and helps you make calm decisions.
This is general education, not personal financial advice.
Direct answer
Investment risk is the chance that you lose money, earn less than you expected, or can't get your money out when you need it. Generally, higher potential returns come with higher risk. Any offer that promises high returns with no risk is a red flag.
Main types of risk
| Risk | What it means |
|---|---|
| Market risk | Prices fall because markets fall |
| Inflation risk | Your money buys less over time |
| Interest rate risk | Rate changes hurt the value of some investments |
| Credit risk | The borrower can't pay you back |
| Liquidity risk | You can't sell quickly without losing value |
| Concentration risk | Too much money in one place |
Systematic vs unsystematic
- Systematic: affects the whole market (a recession).
- Unsystematic: specific to one company or sector. Spreading your money across many investments reduces it.
Risk and return
Take more risk and you might earn more, or lose more. Safer options usually earn less. The trade-off is why "high return, no risk" can't be true.
Time horizon matters
Money you need soon should be treated differently from money you won't touch for decades, because short-term ups and downs matter less over long periods.
Spotting dangerous promises
Beware of "guaranteed" returns, pressure to act fast and unclear explanations. See common financial scams.
