ChatGPT works best for studying when you tell it exactly how to behave.
Direct answer
To use ChatGPT for studying, set it up as a tutor (with instructions that make it quiz you and give hints), paste in your notes or a topic, and practise: explain, answer, get feedback and repeat. Check key facts with your textbook, and follow your school's rules about AI.
A tutor-style instruction
Paste this at the start of a chat, or into custom instructions:
Act as a patient tutor. Ask me one question at a time. Give hints before answers. Tell me what I got right and wrong. If you're not sure of a fact, say so.
Prompt templates
| Goal | Prompt |
|---|---|
| Understand | "Explain [topic] simply, with an everyday example." |
| Test | "Ask me five questions on [topic]. Wait for my answer each time." |
| Feedback | "Here's my answer: [answer]. What's missing or wrong?" |
| Plan | "I have [days] before my exam on [subject]. Make a daily revision plan." |
| Flashcards | "Turn these notes into 15 question-and-answer flashcards: [notes]." |
| Summaries | "Summarise this chapter into 8 key points." |
Exam practice
- Ask for exam-style questions, then mark your own answers against the AI's feedback.
- Ask it to explain mistakes.
- Repeat weak topics a few days later.
Limits
- It can be wrong or invent sources.
- It may not match your syllabus.
- Over-using it can weaken your own recall.
Honest use
Check what your school allows. Use AI to learn, not to submit its work as yours.
