A good prompt is just a clear request. These templates give you a head start. Replace the brackets with your details.

Direct answer

A good prompt states a role, a task, the context, the format you want and, when helpful, an example. Use plain language and be specific. If the first answer is weak, add detail and follow up rather than starting over. Always check the result.

The recipe

Role: You are a [role]. Task: [what you want]. Context: [who it's for, why, constraints]. Format: [length, structure].

Templates

Writing

  1. "You are a friendly editor. Rewrite this email to be shorter and polite, under 100 words: [paste]."
  2. "Turn these rough notes into a clear summary with three bullet points and one next step: [notes]."
  3. "Give me five subject lines for an email about [topic], for [audience]."

Planning

  1. "Make a weekly plan for [goal] with 30 minutes a day. Format as a table."
  2. "Break [project] into steps with a rough time for each."

Learning

  1. "Explain [topic] as if I'm a beginner. Then give me three questions to test myself."
  2. "Ask me one question at a time to check I understand [topic]. Correct me kindly."

Work

  1. "Give me a checklist for preparing a meeting about [topic]."
  2. "List risks and questions I should think about before I [decision]."

Careers

  1. "Act as an interviewer for [role]. Ask me one question at a time and give feedback on my answer. See common interview questions."
  2. "Suggest three ways to improve this CV bullet: [bullet]."

Everyday

  1. "Compare [A] and [B] in a table by cost, time and effort."
  2. "Draft a polite message declining [request]. See how to say no politely."
  3. "Give me a simple meal plan for [days] with a shopping list."
  4. "Before you answer, ask me up to five questions to understand what I need."

Improve any prompt

  • Add who it's for
  • Say what to avoid
  • Provide an example of good output
  • Ask it to ask you questions first

Always check

Verify facts and numbers, and keep private data out. See ChatGPT at work.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ChatGPT prompt?

One with a role, a clear task, context, the format you want and, where useful, an example. The more specific, the better the answer.

Do I need special 'magic' prompts?

No. Clear plain language works. Templates just save you thinking about structure.

How do I improve a prompt that gave a poor answer?

Add context, state the audience and format, give an example and ask for it to ask you questions first.

Can I use these prompts in other AI tools?

Yes. They work with most AI chat assistants.
