The best management tool is a regular conversation.
Direct answer
A one-on-one is a regular private meeting between a manager and a team member. Hold it weekly or fortnightly for about 30 minutes, let the employee lead the agenda, ask open questions, give feedback and note actions. Do not cancel it casually.
A simple agenda
- How are you? (5 minutes)
- Their topics. (10 minutes)
- Progress and blockers. (10 minutes)
- Feedback both ways. (5 minutes)
- Agree actions.
Good questions
- What is going well?
- What is getting in your way?
- What would you like more or less of from me?
- What do you want to learn next?
Mistakes
- Using it only for status updates.
- Cancelling often.
- Talking more than listening.
