A summary is a map. Learning is walking the route.

Direct answer

To use AI with a textbook chapter, read the chapter first, then ask the AI for key ideas, definitions and examples based only on the text you provide, and ask for practice questions. Check the summary against the book and test yourself instead of only rereading the summary.

A workflow

  1. Skim and read the chapter.
  2. Write your own summary in five lines.
  3. Ask AI to summarise using only the text you provide.
  4. Compare the two and fix gaps.
  5. Ask for ten practice questions.
  6. Answer from memory, then check.
  7. Make flashcards for what you missed.

Prompt

"Using only this text, list the five key ideas, define each term and give me eight questions that test understanding. Do not answer them yet."

Cautions

  • Check facts and figures.
  • Respect copyright and course rules about uploading material.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI summarise a textbook chapter?

Yes, if you provide the text, but check the summary against the original because it can omit or distort details.

Is reading a summary enough to learn?

No. Active recall and practice are what build memory.

What should I ask for?

Key ideas, definitions, examples and a set of practice questions.
