Summaries save time when they are faithful.

Direct answer

To summarise a long document with AI, say who the summary is for and what length you need, ask for key points, numbers and risks, split very long documents into sections and check the summary against the original. Do not rely on AI alone for legal, medical or financial documents.

A prompt that works

"Summarise this document for a busy manager in five bullets, then list any numbers, deadlines and risks. Quote the sentence each bullet comes from."

Tips

  • Ask for quotes so you can verify.
  • Chunk long text and combine the summaries.
  • Ask "what is missing?" and "what is uncertain?"
  • Keep confidential documents out of unapproved tools.
