A good update saves meetings.
Direct answer
A good status update gives the overall status, what was done, what is next, risks or blockers and any decisions needed from the reader. Put the most important information first and keep it short.
Template
Status: Green, amber or red, with one line why. Done: two or three bullets. Next: two or three bullets. Risks and blockers: and what you need. Decisions needed: from whom and by when.
Example
Status: Amber. Launch is on track, but legal review is late. Done: finished testing, trained support team. Next: fix three bugs, submit for approval. Blocker: need legal sign-off by Friday. Decision needed: approve copy changes by Thursday (Sam).
Tips
- Lead with the point.
- Be honest about risks early.
- Use the same format every time.
